On December 18, 1971, Congress passed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. In exchange for millions of acres of Alaska’s natural resource rich land, this Act created 13 Alaska Native regional corporations and more than 200 village corporations. Afognak is the village corporation for the original indigenous people who inhabited Afognak Island and lived in the village of Afognak.

Afognak Native Corporation is headquartered in Kodiak, Alaska, and as an Alaska Native Corporation it has very distinctive obligations to its shareholders. ANC ownership is unique in that shares cannot be bought, sold, or traded. Profits earned by Afognak and Alutiiq businesses are returned for the benefit of the shareholders and Afognak’s Native community, providing dividends and job training as well as funding scholarships and various social and cultural programs to improve the quality of life of Ag’uanermiut, “the people of Afognak” in perpetuity.
